Video Tip Transcription

Hi, Brent Abel here, WebTennis.net, and one more tip to get you started this year is I want to make sure that, if you've taken any time off because of the holidays, when you come back out on the court is that you think less about the stroke, what the racquet actually does, and that you focus more on your feet, and what I mean by that is sort of two dimensions.

Number one, I really want you to make sure that, if this is your first time back out after a long break either because of the holidays or maybe an injury or vacation or something like that, is that you really think more about the feet in terms of spacing yourself properly away from the path of the ball, number one, and that number two, as that ball comes in and you sort of get a feel for your swing, is that you don't simply just stand there like a statue and try to work on your stroke, that as you come in, you get the right spacing away, and that you have a little footwork moving forward.

I always want you to feel that there is footwork through to the shot.

And you know, we don't play the game where we come over a ball and we step and we actually hold this position right here for a two or three count.  You can do that in terms of practicing the finished position, but really the way we play the game is we're constantly moving.

Now, I'm not suggesting that I'm going to have you "running through your shots", but you always want to feel that number one, you've got the right spacing, the right distance away from the path of the incoming ball, and number two is that as you hit, you've got a little footwork either moving slightly forward or slightly back towards the middle of the court.

Okay?  So, make sure you're really working on your footwork if you've had some kind of a layoff because of the holidays, and I really hope this has helped.

Any questions, Brent@WebTennis.net .  Thanks very much.
