Treating Your
Patellar Tendonitis
And of course, no worries, your contact info
will
always remain private with me. Period.
Patellar tendonitis is zero fun.
It's the kind of injury that can cause a ton of pain, and lots of frustration
thinking you'll never be able to treat it properly.
And I've been there myself.
I've personally had patellar tendonitis injuries in each knee.
But, after finally getting the
right information and treatment methods, my patellar tendonitis is gone.
For good...
The so called quick fixes... Cortisone,
tons of ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, pain killers, etc., promise immediate
relief. Blah, blah, blah...
And sometimes, sure, you get some immediate
relief, but your patellar tendonitis injury seems to always flair up again.
You know what
patellar tendonitis
is, right...?
I'm not going to try to impress you with all of
the Latin terms for the different body parts that are involved in patellar
tendonitis.
Let's make this simple...
You've got a couple of tendons
that run across the top of and the sides of your kneecap (your patellar bone).
Those couple of tendons help keep
that patellar bone in place (tracking) and connected to your quadriceps muscle
(the muscle above your kneecap) and your shin bone below your knee.
The injury can occur at almost any
area of those tendons.
You can stress out the patellar
related tendons in generally one
of 5 ways.
Repetitive stress.
Over time you repeat the same jarring technique or slight imperfections in your methods (tennis, jumping,
running, work related activities, etc.) can eventually cause the tendon to get stressed, and
yep, then inflamed. Ouch...
Traumatic event.
You do something such as jump from too high a height, land hard in
a sport, cut too quickly in running, or something where that tendon stresses
against the patellar bone. The
tendon goes nuts and again,
ouch...
Poor strength.
You take time off from your activity and do nothing to strengthen the
muscles in your legs while you're inactive, you go back out there, and sure
enough, you're tendon area isn't prepared for the activity, and here we go again,
ouch...
Poor stretching routine.
Your tendons want to be attached to
a stretched out quadriceps muscle, not a tight muscle that pulls the tendon
tight over your patellar bone. Over training without stretching or no
training with no stretching can strain the tendons over the patellar bone.
Overweight.
A common cause of patellar tendonitis is carrying too much weight
for your body type. The knees are constantly being forced into being
stressed out because of too much body weight.
So, the key here is Phase 1:
How do you "heal" the inflamed patellar tendon...?
If you don't properly heal that injured
patellar tendon,
you'll continue to have pain, and if you're like most folks, you'll find a way
to go back out there with some goofy idea of why you can keep playing your sport,
working, or just plain living.
And the chances are huge that
you'll end up doing major damage to some other body part as you compensate for
your patellar tendon injury.
You MUST provide a healing environment for
this injury.
Injecting stuff into your knee, ingesting copious
amounts of ibuprofen, or rubbing "magic" steroid cream on your knee is NOT
setting up a healing environment for your patellar tendon to breathe and start to heal...
Setting up the healing environment for your
patellar tendonitis injury
requires a combination of heat, stretching, and ice.
And a short time period of not doing the activity
that brought you here. Short. Several days, not weeks, not months, but you
know, a few days. Be smart.
Phase 2: Strengthening
Once that tendon is healed, you've got to go
through a strengthening routine to make your leg muscles stronger.
And come on, can you give yourself 2 minutes
before and 2 minutes after your sport or work activity to prevent another
patellar tendonitis injury...? Of course you can.
This is not rocket science. The method for
healing, strengthening, and future patellar tendonitis prevention is tangible and
anyone can do this.
