Forehand
and Backhand Volleys
Imagine...
You've
just played a 3/4 high looping forehand groundstroke in
towards your opponent's backhand side.
He
recognizes your shot is going to be bouncing up high, so

up
because they can't stand to take the ball right off the
bounce.
You
immediately recognize this as an opportunity and you start
to quickly move forward in towards the net.
As they
back up away from their baseline, your opponent is now
struggling just to try and get a decent swing at your high
bouncing groundstroke which has now turned into a golden
opportunity as an approach shot for you.
Just
prior to your
opponent making contact, and even though you're only 1/2 way
between your baseline and service lines, you quietly and
smoothly go into a split step so you can react to whatever
direction and shot speed comes from your opponent's shot.
You
instantly recognize a relatively slower "floater" coming
back towards you off your opponent's racket as they stumble
backwards one more step desperately trying to get back into
some sort of decent court position.
Realizing
you'll be playing a forehand volley, you come out of your
split step quickly, aligning yourself to the side of the
path of your opponent's shot, while at the same time you
prepare your racket to "wait" for your opponent's incoming
shot.
Even
though your racket is waiting for the ball, your feet are
taking you through the final three steps so you'll be able
to get closer to the net on balance to "receive" your
opponent's shot at just your volley's perfect contact point
where your underspin volley stroke mechanics knife away a
skidding cross court volley for an all out winner.
You
can make this happen...
