Just turn on your speakers and click the > button... Hi and really hope this finds you in good spirits...! This holiday season is coming at me like a freight train, and man, I've just got to get organized (about the 245,367th time of said that in the past couple of weeks, yikes...!). Just real quick, the girls and I had a wonderful two days just prior to Thanksgiving hanging out in Yosemite. Crystal clear, but cold... Brrr...! Amazing... If you haven't had the chance to get to Yosemite National Park, somehow work it into your schedule. That place is as inspiring as it gets for me... OK, as I get organized for the 245,368th time, this newsletter includes a tip for you today that focuses on a simple doubles shot selection strategy, an announcement of a great tennis trip over New Year's, and some holiday tennis gift ideas for that player on your list (and yes, that player certainly could be you...!). Tip...
The Tip below can be viewed with the Quick
Time Media Player You know, I see this ALL of the time at all skill levels of doubles, and I'm as guilty as the next player way too often... You're transitioning up to net to join your partner after either a serve or return of serve, you've done a nice job with the split step, after your split you're moving effortlessly and on balance as you move slightly forward to receive the next shot that's been hit to you. And here it comes, that semi-floating high forehand volley, not even a short overhead, but a high forehand volley.
And when you make contact with that high forehand volley you're still behind the service line, no problem, there really hasn't been enough time to move forward on balance to be inside the service line at contact. BUT, our perception is that we really should do something 'big' with this shot, something like end the point NOW...! And unfortunately, it's like a mirage, what appears to be a sure thing, a real opportunity for glory time, is actually a very difficult shot to execute biomechanically, and geometrically we just don't have really good court positioning yet (remember, we're still slightly behind the service line at contact). We get excited, too over anxious, reach out to a bit too early to end the point, and rats, the ball ends up in the bottom of the net. Guilty right, you too? The better players know that what appears to be a juicy put away opportunity in that situation really isn't, and they control the urge to go after that shot as a "I've got to put this away NOW...!"... So here's the deal... Make the service line your reference point as to where on the court you either do or don't have true put away opportunities. If you're inside the service line and the ball is clearly above the top of the net when you make contact, then you might have a put away opportunity. Might..., kinda depends at times, but for now, make that your rule of thumb. If you're in front of the service line and the ball is below or close to the top of the net when you make contact, resist the urge, you don't have a put away opportunity. You might be able to hit shots to your opponents' court that don't come back, but your attitude has to be to NOT think put away... It's OK to stay in the point... And at times you simply stay in the point long enough until your opponents give you a true put away opportunity... If you're behind the service line, and you get the high floater that we're talking about, then simply play it away from the net player back cross court hopefully to that player's feet and continue forward to an ideal volley position inside the service line. Yeah, I know, I know, that high floater seems to just be begging for punishment, but if you have to handle behind the service line, hey, its a false impression, a delusion, an illusion, a fantasy, a trick (man, I love the thesaurus thing... tell me to stop!), but you get the picture, right? And the bottom line is this when you play that shot.... Be sure to take your time. It's way too easy to force the ball back down into the court by pulling your racket down as you hit, and right, the ball goes to the bottom of the net every time? OK, every is a bit harsh, but frequently (don't let me open up the thesaurus again...). Ready for Some Fun in the Sun…?...! New Year’s Tennis in Palm Springs... If you are looking for a special tennis getaway during the holidays, my longtime friend Scott Borowiak is hosting his annual New Year’s event at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage CA.
